December 4, 2000: Lip-Nasal Adhession
Today was Jason's lip-nasal adhesion surgery Dr. Mulliken performed the operation and he did a wonderful job. Jason's nose looks like mommy's now (cute and pudgy).
Surgery was scheduled for 12:30pm, so we left the house at 9:15am, to be at pre-op by 11:00. Jason slept the whole time we were waiting, which was excellent because he obviously couldn't eat anything 6 hours before.
Mom, Dad, and Jason were called into the pre-op holding area at 1:05pm, where we dressed Jason in his very first hospital gown.(which of course mom, couldn't leave the hospital without). At 1:35pm the nurse took Jason into surgery, and mom, dad and nana played the waiting game some more.
At 3:05 pm the liaison nurse gave us an update, the doctor had made his incision at 2:30pm but that was about all seh knew. Finally at 4:05pm Dr. Mulliken called the waiting room and spoke to mom, he said the nose is about 90% repaired, but would come together in the final repair.
At 4:50pm mom and dad were finally able to see Jason, but nothing could ever pre-pare me for what I was about to see. My help-less little angel, curled up on the lap of his nurse just sobbing, those tear jerking jobs,no parent can bear to hear. He had a logan bow taped to his cheeks, and gauze covering his lip and nose. He had arm restraint to keep him from touching his face.
That night in the hospital was pretty rough, Dad had gone home and mom had a pull out cot set up at Jason's bedside (that she of course never even laid down on). Jason was having Apnea spells, where he would hold his breath to the point he would turn blue, at one point his oxygen dropped to 2%. He quickly returned to himself once they took him off the morphine.
On December 5, 2000 at 11:15am we were discharged. with tylenol/codine for pain and discomfort.
February 20, 2001: Complete Lip-Repair
Surgery went wonderful, it took about 4 1/2 hours but it was well worth it! Jason is doing great and looks beautiful. He is blowing bubbles constantly and loves to play with his new found toy (his lip). He has to wear a protective bar over his lip and nose in case he rolls over but it's only taped to his cheeks and will fall off soon. He also has to wear Velcro arm restraints to keep him from touching the suture line, He will be wearing them for about 6 weeks. The Doctor removed some of the stitches on February 24,2000. But he still has about 100 more inside his mouth and on his lip that are disolvable. Over all he is doing great and living up to his nickname CHAMP.
